The following map is known to have been included in another work but was not included in the collection of maps which accompanied the directory. It is dated 1829. This was tipped in as the frontispiece to a Companion to the Lakes by Sir Edward Baines.

The second edition Preface includes the note: "The MAP with which the work is embellished will be found strictly faithful having been carefully corrected down to the year 1830. It is also engraved with a clearness and distinctness rarely perceived in maps of mountainous countries which will assist the traveller in consulting it." No wallet of maps to accompany the directory has been noted by the author.

In the Third edition of 1834 the Preface has a note: The volume is sold both with and without the Map and Frontispiece, — of course at different prices ; and the Map is sold separately in case, accompanied with the Itinerary.

No directory with map has been found but the author has a loose map which would have accompanied this edition. White´s Staffordshire directory map of 1834 is a later reissue of Dix and Darton´s map of the county. In 1822 William Darton (senior) published A Complete Atlas of the English Counties with maps drawn by Thomas Dix. However, individual counties have been seen with earlier dates and the maps were sold as single sheets as they were completed. The original title panels (an attractive roundel) were replaced with a plain title circa 1833, and given a new imprint of William Darton and Son. Nottinghamshire (for Francis White) and Stafford (for William) were adapted for insertion in directories. Later, Berkshire was issued with Melville´s Directory of that county in 1867 and Devon in The Official County Map Guide of c.1877.

The Map

Title (top right): STAFFORDSHIRE Divided into Hundreds and the Parliamentary Divisions (corresponding to the reworked map titles) but with imprint added below in various attractive scripts Published with William White´s History and Directory of this county 1834. Imprint below map (all capitals) London: William Darton & Son, Holborn Hill, 1834. Attractive view of Litchfield Cathedral (bottom right). The five Hundreds are distinctly coloured, usually these have only outline colour. Size: 45 x 35 cm.

 The Map

The map was first used in a History of … Lincoln and as a folding map.

1.   Title (top left): Map of the County Of Lincoln Reduced from the Actual Surveys, London. Imprint: J Saunders Junr, 7 Dyers Buildings, Holborn, 1838 below title. Area top right occupied by View of Lincoln. Engraver´s signature (below left): Engraved by Jas Stevenson, 2 Southampton Street, Pentonville. The whole map is now framed in its typical wide leafy border.[1] In Allen´s History of the County of Lincoln (1838). Published in London by John Saunders Junior.

2.   Title (top left): Map of the County Of Lincoln Reduced from the Actual Surveys, and Carefully Corrected to the year 1839. Imprint: Published by J & J Jackson, Louth below title. Artist´s signature (below right):  Drawn by J Addison. Engraver´s signature (below left): Engraved by Jas Stevenson, 2 Southampton Street, Pentonville. Seen as folded map (in a plain cover).[2]

This map was then possibly acquired by William White as the subsequent issues all bear the imprint of White, with reference to his History and Directory. As usual, the map was not bound in early directories, i.e. for 1842, 1856 and 1872, but the map is found in the directory in the 4th and 5th editions. Nevertheless, loose maps, maps on rollers or maps in covers, with a White imprint have been seen which correspond (date-wise) to published dates of the directories. R A Carroll has listed Lincoln maps thoroughly in his cartobibliography of the county.[3]

Title (top left): Lincoln reduced from the actual surveys, and carefully Corrected to the year 1841. Imprint: Published with White´s History and Directory of Lincolnshire. Artist´s signature (below left):  Drawn by J Addison. Engraver´s signature (below right): Engraved by Jas Stevenson, 2 Southampton Street, Pentonville.  Size: 54.5 x 45cm.

 The Map(s)

Although not called for on the title page there is a note in the Preface: The Whole is Illustrated with an entirely New map of the County, on a Royal Sheet, handsomely engraved and coloured, and shewing the boundaries of the Wapentakes and Boroughs; and a map is recorded in directory issues for this year. The map was originally engraved by John Dower as one of a long series for The Weekly Dispatch newspaper in 1858. The maps by Dower, B R Davies and Edward Weller appeared in The Dispatch Atlas in 1863. After changing ownership, the map stones came into the possession of G W Bacon who used them extensively, running off copies for another Lincoln directory, Akrill, Ruddock and Keyworth´s Directory of the City of Lincoln (1888).

Title (top right, almost all in capitals): White´s County Map of Lincolnshire. Showing all the railways and names of the stations, also the villages, turnpike roads, gentlemen´s seats &c., reduced from the Ordnance Survey. Lancashire, Derbyshire & East Coast Railways thus. Imprint below: Published by Wm White, Ltd, 9 St James´ Row, Sheffield.  Further imprint below map: Published by Wm White Ltd, 9 St James´ Row, Sheffield. There is a symbol for Roads below the title, but the explanation for Railways is below scale bar.[7] Size: 67 x 45 cm.

The above details are taken from a map in the collection of Wesley Pepperdine posted on facebook which corresponds to the map quoted by Carroll. However, a version held at Nottingham University and another offered online (ebay in 2026) has a shorter title, omitting everything after Ordnance Survey including lack of imprint below title.
