The Map
The first
edition includes a J & C Walker map from the British Atlas. However, there are significant
differences to the original 1837 map. The words and RUTLAND have been inserted into the title frame, erasing
part of the inner lozenge pattern. The list of returning MPs has been moved
from the bottom of the map to occupy a space right of the title panel. The
right-hand bottom corner is now taken up by an inset map showing CONTINUATION
OF RUTLANDSHIRE on the same Scale. This crosses the map margin at one
point. The area of Rutland covered in the original map is now shown in detail
(was only in outline). There appears to be no typical walker imprint below map
(but margin is narrow) but an imprint has been added top left by the compass: Engraved
for White´s History and Directory of Leicestershire and Rutlandshire. 1846.
This is the first William White map
so far located to have a J & C Walker map. Maps from the British Atlas
remained in use until the 1870s. Intriguingly, the original map (i.e. without
amendments noted here) was still being sold as a folding map in covers about
this time.

The Map
Although no map has been so far located which might have accompanied the 1863 Second Edition, we can be fairly certain that it was an updated J & C Walker map. This British Atlas, as it is sometimes called due to the dedication to Princess Victoria, was published by Longman, Rees & Co. Paternoster Row, and J. & C. Walker, 3, Burleigh Street, Strand, London, 1837 although some maps have earlier dates. Although the atlas was not immediately republished, the maps were frequently updated and sold as folding maps in blue covers with a Walker label. Both atlas and folding maps until circa 1846 were dated and had the imprint: Published by Longman, Orme, Rees and Co.
In 1846, the map of Leicestershire was included by White in his History and Directory of Leicester with Rutland. Before it could be used, however, it had to be adapted to include Rutland, which was largely missing from the original map. The Walker imprint was removed and there is simply a line to the left of the title which reads: Engraved for White´s History and Directory of Leicestershire and Rutlandshire. 1846.
This was the first J. & C. Walker map to be used by William White but others would follow. When Essex appeared two years later it included a J. & C. Walker map but lacking any reference to publisher. When the Walker map was used in 1850 for the directory for Devonshire, we see the White imprint for the first time; Published with WHITE’S History, Gazetteer & Directory of the Counties of [county]. From this date, the Longman imprint is often found on maps from the British Atlas, but a variation of the Walker imprint on the folding maps: Published by J & C Walker, 9 (later 37) Castle Street, Holborn London. In 1850, John Murray included adapted Walker maps in his Handbook of Devon and Cornwall. The First Edition had the typical Longman imprint; the Second Edition a year later had a Walker imprint.
