The Map
As yet, no copy of
a map of Hampshire
corresponding to a publication date of 1859 has been identified which could
have been published to accompany White´s directory. However, the map which
accompanied the Second Edition of 1878 is unique and could well have been
commissioned by White for inclusion in the First Edition and is assumed to be
much as below but lacking some improvements. As Franks died in 1859, it was
probably not engraved by him but has elements of his style.

The Map
Although not mentioned on the title
page, the map which has been found in the 1878 directory is very ornate and
unusual. The attractive title with the publisher´s imprint (top left) is
written in a variety of different scripts. The sheet is surrounded by a floral
border and four ancient seals of cities are shown in the four corners. The map
includes Coats of Arms top centrally, and two attractive vignette views:
of Winchester Cathedral (bottom left); and Osborne
House (bottom right). Unfortunately, there is no artist or
engraver´s signature.

Princeton copy also has the top right corner of the map but the rest of the map
has since been torn away and lost.
