The Map
White´s first edition of Essex,
included a map executed by J & C Walker for their British Atlas. This
was the first recorded use of a J&C Walker map to be adapted for William
White. Devonshire would follow only two years later, other counties followed.
The British Atlas was
first published in 1837 (the first Essex is actually dated 1835), and then numerous
times to 1871 (or later), and also as Hobson's Fox Hunting Atlas (1850
to 1880), or as Walker's Fox Hunting Atlas (up to 1895) with
added information on meets of fox hounds and later as Lett's Popular
Atlas (1884 & 87). Usually, Walker maps have an imprint along
the bottom (and until 1846 it was dated) "Published by Longman, Orme, Rees
& Co, Paternoster Row, London." This example lacks any imprint.
Devonshire (1950) and all subsequent Walker maps used by White have William
White´s imprint.

The Map
The map used for the 1863 second
edition was not a Walker map, but a late adaption of a John Cary map. G F
Cruchley had acquired these maps and republished them frequently (the third
Devonshire edition of 1890 is also an example of a Cruchley-Cary map replacing
Walker maps). The map was being issued by Cruchley as a folding map in card
covers at the same time (1857-1868). The title would have been essentially the
same; Cruchley only needed to change his name for White´s, and to remove his
imprint below the title and insert White´s imprint. The title was changed to … Railway
& Station Map … after this issue.
Title bottom right in various scrips: WHITE´S RAILWAY & TELEGRAPHIC MAP Of ESSEX Showing all the Railways & Names of Stations also the Telegraph Lines & Stations, Improved from the Ordnance Surveys.
