Edward Baines
must have been interested in maps. To accompany his first major directory, that
of Yorkshire published in two volumes, he published an atlas of maps. Both the
West Riding volume and the East and North Riding volumes boasted Illustrated
by Maps and Plans on the title page. Only Volume I mentioned the price,
this was to be 7s 6d
bound in Sheep, or 8s 6d per Volume in Calf for those who subscribed in advance.
Non-subscribers were to pay 10s 6d or 11s 6d per volume. It is not clear
whether the maps and plans are included in this price.

[2] Alfred Smith seems to have been a local surveyor. His name appears in Leeds Mercury and Leeds Intelligencer between 1820 and 1827 in connection with estate sales.
