 The Map

Includes a map adapted from that published in the British Atlas. Title Nottinghamshire in double lozenge top left with imprint below of BY J & C Walker. William White´s imprint below the map centrally: Published with WHITES History, Gazetteer & Directory of Nottinghamshire. 1885. This replaces the usual “Walker” imprint of Published by J & C Walker, 9 Castle St Holborn, London, as used from 1851 to circa 1875. Size 42 x 35 cm.

BY WILLIAM WHITE, LIMITED, PUBLISHERS 0F SIMILAR WORKS FOR LINCOLNSHIRE, NORFOLK, SUFFOLK, DEVONSHIRE, LEICESTERSHIRE, HAMPSHIRE. AND OTHER C0UNTIES. PRICE: -CLOTH, 30.s; HALF-BOUND, 35s. Title page omits edition number and mention of map. However, the Preface refers to this as the Third Edition and mentions that: A New Map has been specially prepared for this Edition.

The Map

The new map that replaced the J & C Walker of the 2nd edition is from Philips´ Atlas of the Counties of England. This colour printed map has the original title Nottinghamshire as used by George Philip and Son but with MAP ISSUED WITH WHITE´S (NOTTINGHAMSHIRE) added between Grantham and original title. No signature of engraver/lithographer, no page no. (was 28). Note on colouring bottom right. This was: The Colouring represents the Parliamentary Divisions & Parliamentary Boroughs; but also has new note below Each Division of the County returns 1 member. The Borough of Nottingham returns 3 members. Size: 41.5 x 33 cm.
