 The Map

One example of a map for 1855 (at East Anglia University, Norwich) and copies of the 1874 and 1885 directories with map have been reported. The later map bears the engraver´s signature of J H Franks but is essentially an adapted version of the 1855 map, hence the map was almost certainly used to accompany all editions of the directory (1844, 1855, 1874 and 1885). No map which can be dated to 1844 has been found.

Price to Subscribers, 13s 6d. in Calf BINDING or 12s in Boards. 1848. Pages: 725 + 7 1/2.

 The Map

White´s first edition of Essex, included a map executed by J & C Walker for their British Atlas. This was the first recorded use of a J&C Walker map to be adapted for William White. Devonshire would follow only two years later, other counties followed.

The British Atlas was first published in 1837 (the first Essex is actually dated 1835), and then numerous times to 1871 (or later), and also as Hobson's Fox Hunting Atlas (1850 to 1880), or as Walker's Fox Hunting Atlas (up to 1895) with added information on meets of fox hounds and later as Lett's Popular Atlas (1884 & 87). Usually, Walker maps have an imprint along the bottom (and until 1846 it was dated) "Published by Longman, Orme, Rees & Co, Paternoster Row, London." This example lacks any imprint. Devonshire (1950) and all subsequent Walker maps used by White have William White´s imprint.

Second Edition. BY WILLIAM WHITE. PRINTED FOR THE AUTHOR BY LEADER & SONS, INDEPENDENT OFFICE, SHEFFIELD, And Sold by WM WHITE, Broomhall Park, Sheffield; by his Agents, and SIMPKIN, MARSHALL & Co., LONDON.

Price to Subscribers, 14s. in Calf BINDING or 12s 6d. in Boards. 1863. Pages: 764 + 7 ½ + 1 (Fairs).

 The Map

The map used for the 1863 second edition was not a Walker map, but a late adaption of a John Cary map. G F Cruchley had acquired these maps and republished them frequently (the third Devonshire edition of 1890 is also an example of a Cruchley-Cary map replacing Walker maps). The map was being issued by Cruchley as a folding map in card covers at the same time (1857-1868). The title would have been essentially the same; Cruchley only needed to change his name for White´s, and to remove his imprint below the title and insert White´s imprint. The title was changed to … Railway & Station Map … after this issue.

Title bottom right in various scrips: WHITE´S RAILWAY & TELEGRAPHIC MAP Of ESSEX Showing all the Railways & Names of Stations also the Telegraph Lines & Stations, Improved from the Ordnance Surveys.  (Ee). Imprint (below title): Published with THE History, Gazetteer, & Directory of Essex. By WILLIAM WHITE, Sheffield, 1863. No signature. Size approx.: 48 x 54 cm.

Price to Subscribers, 12s in Boards or 13s 6d. in Calf with the Map. 1846.

Pages: 704 + 5.

 The Map

The first edition includes a J & C Walker map from the British Atlas. However, there are significant differences to the original 1837 map. The words and RUTLAND have been inserted into the title frame, erasing part of the inner lozenge pattern. The list of returning MPs has been moved from the bottom of the map to occupy a space right of the title panel. The right-hand bottom corner is now taken up by an inset map showing CONTINUATION OF RUTLANDSHIRE on the same Scale. This crosses the map margin at one point. The area of Rutland covered in the original map is now shown in detail (was only in outline). There appears to be no typical walker imprint below map (but margin is narrow) but an imprint has been added top left by the compass: Engraved for White´s History and Directory of Leicestershire and Rutlandshire. 1846.

This is the first William White map so far located to have a J & C Walker map. Maps from the British Atlas remained in use until the 1870s. Intriguingly, the original map (i.e. without amendments noted here) was still being sold as a folding map in covers about this time.

Second Edition. BY WILLIAM WHITE

Price ONE GUINEA.

SHEFFIELD: WILLIAM WHITE, FULWOOD PARSONAGE; LONDON: SIMPKIN, MARSHALL, & Co. DECEMBER, 1863. Pages: Preface + White vs Drake (1) + 852.

 The Map

Although no map has been so far located which might have accompanied the 1863 Second Edition, we can be fairly certain that it was an updated J & C Walker map. This British Atlas, as it is sometimes called due to the dedication to Princess Victoria, was published by Longman, Rees & Co. Paternoster Row, and J. & C. Walker, 3, Burleigh Street, Strand, London, 1837 although some maps have earlier dates. Although the atlas was not immediately republished, the maps were frequently updated and sold as folding maps in blue covers with a Walker label. Both atlas and folding maps until circa 1846 were dated and had the imprint: Published by Longman, Orme, Rees and Co.

In 1846, the map of Leicestershire was included by White in his History and Directory of Leicester with Rutland. Before it could be used, however, it had to be adapted to include Rutland, which was largely missing from the original map. The Walker imprint was removed and there is simply a line to the left of the title which reads: Engraved for White´s History and Directory of Leicestershire and Rutlandshire. 1846.

This was the first J. & C. Walker map to be used by William White but others would follow. When Essex appeared two years later it included a J. & C. Walker map but lacking any reference to publisher. When the Walker map was used in 1850 for the directory for Devonshire, we see the White imprint for the first time; Published with WHITE’S History, Gazetteer & Directory of the Counties of [county]. From this date, the Longman imprint is often found on maps from the British Atlas, but a variation of the Walker imprint on the folding maps: Published by J & C Walker, 9 (later 37) Castle Street, Holborn London. In 1850, John Murray included adapted Walker maps in his Handbook of Devon and Cornwall. The First Edition had the typical Longman imprint; the Second Edition a year later had a Walker imprint.

In the space left by the removal of the original imprint there are two or three locations including Morley Toll Bar. Population figure altered below title. Price to Subscribers, 14s in Calf Binding, or 12s 6d.  in Boards. 1859. Pages: 2 + Preface + 664.

 The Map

As yet, no copy of a map of Hampshire corresponding to a publication date of 1859 has been identified which could have been published to accompany White´s directory. However, the map which accompanied the Second Edition of 1878 is unique and could well have been commissioned by White for inclusion in the First Edition and is assumed to be much as below but lacking some improvements. As Franks died in 1859, it was probably not engraved by him but has elements of his style.

 The Map

Although not mentioned on the title page, the map which has been found in the 1878 directory is very ornate and unusual. The attractive title with the publisher´s imprint (top left) is written in a variety of different scripts. The sheet is surrounded by a floral border and four ancient seals of cities are shown in the four corners. The map includes Coats of Arms top centrally, and two attractive vignette views: of Winchester Cathedral (bottom left); and Osborne House (bottom right). Unfortunately, there is no artist or engraver´s signature.
